THE MARQUESS AND I
Stacy Reid
This is an excellent match of authors for immensely enjoyable regency romance novellas set around a Midsummer ball. The stories are fresh and exciting. Each author’s details and descriptions turns you from a reader to being emerged in the story. Heartbreaking…heartwarming…intriguing…endearing are only a few words I would use to describe the emotions in the stories. This is a set that will have you desiring to re-read it several times.
The Marquess and I by Stacy Reid
Stacy is already one of my favorite authors who always writes wonderful, lovely romance novels. In The Marquess and I, she takes a different turn. Lady Willow Arlington is blind. She does not want to be a burden to any husband and not having a dowry has helped her avoid the marriage mart. Before she was blind, she met Alasdair Morley, a third son. He proposed to her, making her happy. Then, her father accepted a Duke’s offer for her instead.
Six years later, Alasdair returns from war and is now a Marquess. He needs an heiress but cannot pull himself away from Lady Willow who is know to have lost her dowry. He wants to punish her refusing him by seducing her and walking away. Imagine his surprise when she asks for a discreet affair without any expectation of marriage.
This is extremely well-written with characters that leap off the page. They are easy to fall in love with. Ms. Reid unfolded this vibrant story at a pace that kept the book in my hands. This is another excellent novel from a gifted author. She is on my one-click list and should be added to every reader who enjoys regency romance. Outstanding start to this box set.
Midnight Wish by Lila Maxton
This was my first novella by Ms. Maxton, and I am glad she was included in this box set. In Midnight Wish, Lady Jane Cartwright is an heiress who wants a husband that wants her for herself instead of her dowry. Her father wants her to marry a titled man. At the ball, Stephen falls from a tree. Lady Jane is drawn to him and once her parents find out he is a future earl and his father needs her dowry, they marry. A year later, the marriage is in trouble. Their parents pushed the marriage for the wrong reasons and it had taken it’s impact on them. When Stephen, Lord Somerby, thinks Lady Jane is having an affair with their neighbor, he sweeps her to London and decides to court his wife.
I liked how this story flowed with scenes in current times and in the past. The intrigue as to how they came together in spurts was perfectly written. I will read more of Lila Maxton.
Once Upon A Promise by Nicola Davidson
Ms. Davidson is another new author to me, but she has been added to my must-read list. This story has a new premise where the hero and heroine don’t meet and fall in love, Emma Monclair and Major Caleb Montclair are already married. The problem is that he stayed away at war instead of taking leave to spend time with Emma. When he returns for good, she asks for a separation. Caleb, seeing he has competition and knowing he does not want to lose her, convinces her to give him 6 weeks to court her and make their marriage work.
Caleb and Emma were excellent characters that captured my heart. The story was engaging with a smooth flow. Caleb could easily be your favorite character in this box set. Ms. Davidson wrote a story that captures your imagination and has you rooting for the characters. Don’t miss future novels by Ms. Davidson.
And Then The Moon by Ally Broadfield
Lady Madalene enjoyed her life and looked forward to reaching her majority and inheritance so she could be free from the chains of London society. However, her father demands she accept an offer of married by the end of the season or he’d gain one for her. After increasing her dowry, rakes and desperate men attempt to court her. When she finds out Lord Duncan Alstead, a new viscount, is not excited about looking for a wife, Lady Madaline convinces him to a fake betrothal to help her. The challenge was that when they were out and about, they had to act as a couple in love. That closeness changes both of their thoughts on a fake engagement.
Duncan is a true hero, saving Madalene from her unwanted fate. I enjoyed watching their romance develop. Her father angered me when he refused to allow her to marry Duncan after he gave him some land he felt had been stolen. Then he decides to marry her off to another.
This was a great novella to end the box set. If you haven’t read Ms. Broadfield yet, you are missing out on books from an exceptional author.
