An interview with Victoria Paige by Sheila Kell

1. Share with us a little about yourself.

When I’m not working at my computer job, you can find me on the couch reading. I’m also a mood writer. I will write nothing for weeks, and then I’ll write straight for a month. I also love to eat, and I used to be a pastry chef. Sometimes my love for food carries into my books. 🙂

 2. What inspired this novel/series?

I wanted to write an erotic thriller different from my usual military romances. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone—write flawed characters and skirt the edges of moral ambiguity.

3. Who did you dedicate your first novel to and why?

I dedicated it to a good friend who read the first five chapters of my first book. I didn’t really think it would go anywhere. A few weeks after I sent her the chapters, she asked me where the rest of the chapters were, so I HAD to finish the book. 🙂

4. Do the characters often do their own thing, no matter how you planned the story?

Always. I may get them started, but around a quarter into the book, they take over. I can hear their voices in my head. There was one book, I grew attached to the villain. I had to change the plot to save him and it turned out better.

5. Besides this novel, what can we expect from you in the future?

I’m working on Always #3, the third book in my second-chance romance series. After this, I’m planning a series based around a small town. It will have a suspense plot for each book. The residents of the town are protecting a secret.

I work as a freelance database administrator, and when I’m not geeking out, I write romantic suspense novels. I live in Richmond, Va–less than two hours away from Washington DC–so most of the settings of my books are in the nation’s capital–of course, I’m not averse to creating fictional towns and cities. 😉

When I’m not arguing with the alpha male characters in my head, I love to watch high-octane action movies.

Interview with Morgan Sheppard, author of Water Weaver

I met Morgan Sheppard some time ago and love that she allowed me to interview her. Her first novel, Water Weaver,  is in the works. We can expect to see it later this year. Very exciting! I grilled her and know you’ll love her answers. I even learned more about this amazing woman.

I encourage you to follow her with the links at the end of the post to be the first to know when Water Weaver will be released.

Interview

Author Photo

1) Morgan, please share with us a little about yourself.
I am a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter, a friend and a lover. I am many things, been given many labels but I can say that I am just ‘simple complicated’ me.

Always a prolific reader and dabbler in my younger days with short stories, poems and limericks, I am currently working on my first novel ‘Water Weaver’ and I am enjoying the process although it is very different from writing stories as a schoolgirl!

My favourite quote is “You have to “aim high and reach for your dreams”, favourite colour is rich purple and favourite food would be chocolate! My favourite time of day is night-time and I love the moon in all her beautiful phases. My favourite season has always been Autumn/Fall. I love the rain and thunderstorms.

2) What inspired this novel?
Nothing external inspired this novel. I had a scene in my mind for years which just wouldn’t leave me alone. In January of last year, I decided to enter a writing competition with this scene, slightly embellished, to see if that would do it. Although I didn’t win the competition, I actually received a very positive reaction to my story with lots of questions from others asking where it was going, how it got there, what happens next? So I decided to start writing and see where I got taken. And I have to say, it’s the best decision I’ve made. I’m loving every moment. There’s still a lot to learn and I’m happy to take all advice but I feel like I’m doing this for me and that’s the right thing, right here, right now.

3) What do you do besides write?
First and foremost, it’s spending time with my two young girls (7 and 5). The time goes by so quickly and I don’t want to miss out with them. So yes, spending time with my family and being a wife and mother is probably the main thing I do.

After that, I’m split but it’s all book related. I run a book page and blog doing promotional tours, cover reveals etc and reviews, so I’m usually busy making sure that everything is scheduled and written out correctly. Then I’m also reading. Every night apart from maybe one when my hubby insists that I put my book down and spend some time with him lol. So inconsiderate 😉

I used to run my own cross stitch card business but that is just a hobby for myself now – not that I seem to have the time to do it but there you go.

4) Tell us about where you write.
My writing area is a bit of a hodge podge at the moment. I wish I could say that it’s a beautiful desk, with everything laid out correctly and it’s all neat and tidy… but I can’t. My desk is actually a tabletop bought from Ikea which is resting on a couple of trestle legs. My chair is actually a chair that belongs to our garden set so it isn’t the most comfortable one out there. I do keep it as neat as I can but it’s difficult as it’s in the corner of the living room and as such can be a dumping ground. Hubby has promised that very soon I will be getting a “proper” desk but this will do for now.

5) What is the toughest part of writing?
For me, the toughest part of writing has to do with self-confidence. That nagging voice just won’t shut up with the self-doubts at times and I find myself comparing myself to others and always coming out worst! It’s been a hard lesson to learn and I still find myself tripping up occasionally but I am working on it and doing the best I can for myself. It isn’t fair on anyone to compare a rough first draft with a polished, edited, proofread, formatted etc final edition. I will get there but it’s going to take time.

One thing I’ve also had to learn about is the speed of a genre. I write epic fantasy which by its very nature, is L-O-N-G! You can’t compare this to, say, a contemporary romance which could be complete within 65-80,000 words. They both have different speeds but both can be completely enjoyable. So I need to stop worrying about the length, concentrate on the quality and then bring them both together in the editing process.

6) Besides this novel, what can we expect from you in the future?
Besides this novel, I have plans for at least one more book in this series but it will be the next generation in that book. I’ve also got an idea floating around for a set of children’s illustrated books based in North Wales and bringing together Celtic animals and trees. I’m going to concentrate on Water Weaver first though and who knows what might follow.

When Robbi  Bennett, special education teacher extraordinaire, decided to move from New York to California, it was for reasons beyond trading snowstorms for sunshine and surfing. Following the tragic death of her parents, and several doomed relationships, she craved a fresh start; an opportunity to reinvent herself.
Tyler D’Angelo, bad-boy biker and self-proclaimed man-whore, equates love with weakness. For decades, he has kept his heart on lockdown, but meeting Robbi turns his solitary life inside out as they are inexplicably drawn to each other. Can love be strong enough to overcome a lifetime of fear?
(This story features two hearing impaired characters. The story also involves information related to deafness, deaf education, and American Sign Language.)

An interview with Teri McGill by Sheila Kell

1. Share with us a little about yourself.  I was born and raised in Fresh Meadows (Queens) New York. After a few years of teaching 4th and 7th grade Math, I got my Master’s Degree in Deaf Education and spent the next 12 years teaching secondary Math (and tap dance in the after-school theatre arts program) at the Lexington School for the Deaf. I moved to Los Angeles in 1994 and spent the following 18 years teaching deaf students Math and ASL (American Sign Language) at Granada Hills High School and Fairfax High School. This explains the recurring themes of deafness and ASL in my novels.
2. What inspired this novel/series?  After retiring in 2012, I had a lot of free time. I contacted Becky Johnson at Hot Tree Editing and she took me on as a beta reader. After reading a multitude of fabulously hot romances, I thought that perhaps I would try it as well. I had written a screenplay in ’96 (20 copies are gathering dust in my garage), but now … in 2015 … the self-publishing phenomenon has enabled the writer to take control of their own destiny and ‘just do it’! I used an idea (no spoilers!) from that screenplay and created a completely different story and characters. I soon realized, as I approached and then passed 150k words, that 2 books would be necessary. But … trilogies seem to be so popular now, I decided to take a minor character from Book #1 (I confess, I had fallen a bit in love with him) and create a story about him for Book #3. So the series – MY HEART IS YOURS – was born!
3. Who did you dedicate your first novel to and why?  My parents
Dedication: Mom and Dad
Although you have been gone from this Earth for a while, you are always in my heart. You both read to me as a child and constantly encouraged me to read. Neither one of you thought it odd when the occasional neighbor would report that I had been observed walking to and from school every day, with an open book in my hands. Thank you. I miss you both.My mother worked from home throughout my entire life. Although forced to quit school and go to work at 14, education was very important to her and my father, who did have a college degree. I was an only child and got lots of attention … the good kind: books, books, and more books! At an early age I was hooked on Nancy Drew (am I dating myself?) and fiction of all kinds. My dad instilled a love of Mathematics in me … giving me Algebra riddles before I was even in first grade! He was also a fanatic about correct spelling. Perhaps that’s why I love proofreading so much. My parents sacrificed a lot to send me to one of the best Catholic, all-girls schools in NYC, and then to St. John’s University. When I decided to go to graduate school to become a teacher of the Deaf, they supported me 100%, financially and emotionally.
4. Tell us about where you write? (Your office, desk, couch, etc – covered in paper, clean, etc. – cats in the way)?  I write exclusively at my computer desk in my office/guest bedroom. It is always messy (although somewhat organized) with tons of Post-it notes everywhere! I always have my morning coffee while I’m writing, and sometimes lunch too. I keep small notepads everywhere in case an idea pops up: gym bag, car, purse, tucked in my Kindle’s cover, and my cell phone is always ready to type in a quick reminder for an idea/random word/cool name for a character/a sentence of dialogue/a plot twist/ a teaser, etc.
5. What is the biggest lesson you have learned while writing this novel/series? I think I have gained a deeper understanding of life and have certainly become much more emotional. (Perhaps way TOO emotional!) In my early twenties, I decided I didn’t want children. Although I was a teacher my entire career, I wasn’t that crazy about kids, especially the little ones. I have always LOVED teenagers and spent the majority of my career in high schools. There are several young children who are major characters in my trilogy. I have fallen in love with each of them so deeply, I now become emotional when I am out in public and see a child who resembles one of my characters. Also, when a character dies (because I killed him/her) it’s devastating to me, even when the death is ‘necessary’ because it drives the entire plot forward.

6. Besides this novel, what can we expect from you in the future?  Books 2 and 3 will be out soon.

MY HEART IS YOURS (SERIES)

SIGNS OF A QUIET HEART (Book #1 – released 2/9/15)

LIVING FOR TWO (Book #2 – currently in final editing. To be released 4/1/15, perhaps earlier)

LOST AND FOUND (Book #3 – approximately 75 – 80% complete. Release date: TBA)

I have a few ideas for more novels, but no titles to reveal yet.

Thank you, Sheila Kell, for this lovely opportunity! It was a bit difficult to answer only some of the questions … they were so thought-provoking, I felt like answering them ALL!

Teri McGill grew up in Queens, New York and moved to warm and sunny Los Angeles in 1994, immediately following the Northridge earthquake. She taught Mathematics to deaf high school students for thirty years, which explains some of the recurring themes in her stories. When she is not at the computer, either writing or beta reading/proofreading, she enjoys working out, golf, mosaics, Math tutoring, and watching sports.

USA Today Bestselling Author Clarissa Wild stops by

delirious series complete

Today I have the distinct honor to interview USA Today Bestselling author Clarissa Wild. After she agreed to visit, I hit my one-click on the first book in the Delirious series. Well, that ended with the next one-click, and I’m almost ready for the next. A little birdy informed me SCORCH will be available on Amazon around March 3rd. A beta reader said to be prepared for my socks to be knocked off. I can’t wait!

There is a great deal in today’s post: Clarissa‘s interview, her bio, stalker links, great teasers for current and upcoming books and a book review. Her start in writing is interesting. Read on. You won’t be disappointed.

Interview

Clarissa, please share with us a little about yourself.
Hi! I’m Clarissa Wild, and I’m a writer of new adult romance and dark romance. I love my heroes badass and my heroines not-so-perfect. As long as it has a heavy dose of schmexy time, I’m good! ❤

What inspired this novel/series?
I wrote the Delirious Series with the mindset that I wanted to display how a mentally sick person can skew the reader’s view of the world to the point of the reader not knowing the difference between reality and fantasy. I also wanted to mess with people’s minds. Yeah, I know, I’m sick, but I just love confusing and shocking people. It’s what I do best!

Was it your childhood dream to be a writer? If not, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I actually started writing when I was 6. When I was 11 I wrote my first book of about 60000 words. Then another when I was 14, and another when I was 16. I was quite the voracious writer. I never wanted to do anything else, but I did have backups in place, because my parents didn’t want me to end up broke. LOL. So I studied digital design. It comes in handy with designing covers. 😉 Hehe. I always said I was going to be an author, someday. Guess how that turned out 😀

What is your go-to activity when you find it difficult to write? (need to clear your mind)
I listen to music, searching on youtube for new undiscovered songs. Music means a lot to my creative and ability to write, it’s an integral part of the writing process for me. I also like to squander time by creating teasers if I really need something else (and useful) to do for a while 🙂

What is the biggest lesson you have learned while writing this novel/series?
You cannot please everyone. That, and outline the shit out of everything!

Besides this novel, what can we expect from you in the future?
I am going to write a new dark erotic standalone, which comes out in June, called STALKER. 🙂 You can find it on goodreads already: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24471388-stalker
There’s also a prequel coming up called KILLER, which will be in a boxed set this may. I also have a few other ideas planned this year, but I won’t spill the beans until I’ve had more time to develop them, so you’ll just have to wait and see 😉

Review5 star pic

I read USA Today Bestselling author Clarissa Wild‘s first book in the Delirious series – SNARE after receiving the prequel SEEK for free. I could not read fast enough to find out what would happen next. Nothing was as I anticipated.

In Ms. Wild‘s SNARE, she takes the reader on an intriguing journey as they follow Lillith Carrigan in her search for the man she believes to be her savior and love. Only when she finds Sebastian Brand, he is anything but the man she thought. She refuses to believe he is evil until he holds her as his house guest, a prisoner who will meet his every need. Yet she still  yearns for the man she dreamed of while hospitalized.

Meanwhile, Sebastian’s healthy appetite is not the only one in the story. Although it’s never specific, the men he is in a club with enjoy themselves a bit too much. Even they disgust him and that’s saying a lot. But he knows the only way out is death. Then the men learn he has Lillith, who could risk it all and things get a little crazy.

And when she finds out…I’m not going to give that huge spoiler away. Believe me, you’ll want to know.

The characters in this story leap off the pages. You’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen one minute and then fanning yourself after a heated sex scene the next. The story she weaves sucks you in and you won’t want to get out until you know it all. This is a must read but only if you plan to finish the series to find out all of the truths.

Spotlight: Valentine’s Day advice from the Blackbird Security pack

Heart ribbon

MasqueradeCover800

I’m excited Dahlia Donovan’s Blackbird pack stopped in today. I allowed them free reign on their post but I believe Dahlia had to control them. If you like shifters, hot men, strong women, laughs and danger then the the Blackbird series is perfect for you. Five stars all around from me. I highly recommend not just Masquerade but the entire series!

Thank you Sheila for inviting my pack of misfits over to your pack.
In a celebration of Valentine’s Day which is coming up soon, I thought we’d interrogate the pack on their thoughts on romance and the day itself.
So Valentine’s Day? Thoughts?
Elaine: Waste of bloody money.
Darren: Ever the romantic, our cougar.
Elaine: Wanker.
Josh: Valentine’s day is great for spoiled toffs.
Lorcan: Says the kitty who indulged a woman with twelve days of gifts at Christmas.
Josh: That was Christmas.
Lorcan: Are you expecting us to believe you don’t have any plans for February 14th? You’ve lost your bleeding mind.
Josh: I’ll boil yours in chicken broth if you don’t shut it.
Steve: Can we possibly get through this without violence? For once? And just answer the bloody question.
Natasha: Romance isn’t restricted to a day.
Steve: Well this is going brilliantly. Valentine’s Day is a lovely excuse to spoil Ivy with demonstrations of our love for her.
Gareth: What the smooth git said.
Lorcan: Ronan and I choose to celebrate on the fourteenth because it took so bloody long to admit what we meant to each other.
Darren: Romantic sodding bunny.
Elaine: Better than a furry fox with no romantic.

I think we’ll end it there before this devolves into a fight.
Happy Valentine’s Day if you celebrate.
What’s the most romantic thing anyone’s ever done for you?

Synopsis

As the months have gone by since Ivy and her wolves bonded, hints have continually been dropped about moving in together and marriage. It’s unfortunate then that the romantic proposal which Ivy had hoped for never quite arrived. Her two alpha wolves instead merely demand her hand in marriage.
Suitably unimpressed, Ivy tells her gits to bugger off and hops on a private jet for a swanky masked ball in Monte Carlo with Alicia, Alim and Dane.
Can Steve and Gareth find the right words to win the yes from her lips?
You just never know who or what you’ll find at a masquerade.

Excerpt

“You look stunned.” Ivy shot him an amused smile. She glanced between the two alphas. “I’ll be in Monte-Carlo for a few days. Alim has his entire security team with him, so I’ll be perfectly safe. I’ve got my mobile with me. There is literally no reason on Earth I can imagine the two of you needing to pop up at this ball, so why don’t you do something more useful, like talk to each other? Figure out a way to fix the problem you gits created.”

“Love…”

With a slow shake of her head, Ivy silenced Steve’s argument. She pressed soft kisses on both of their cheeks before walking gracefully away, placing her hand lightly on Alim’s arm to let him escort her from the apartment. They heard her quiet laughter when two low growls rumbled from both of the wolves at the same time.

Gareth glanced over at his partner with a groan. “We’re bloody fools.”

“Accurate.”

Author interview with Sean Kinsley

This week I am excited to chat with Sean Kinsley, a writer and illustrator. Today we’re going to learn more about Sean’s novel Wicked Tides and about Sean himself. Sit back and enjoy the read!

Wicked Tides by Sean Kinsley Cover

Wicked Tides

Sean Kinsley

A dark fantasy, hardcore action novel

Amazon review

★★★★★ “All I can say is it is very descriptive and amazing. I wish there was a way I can make Sean Kinsley kick out a sequel tomorrow. HURRY IT UP! 😀 Awesome read, and totally recommend it!”

Synopsis

After intercepting a convoy containing crucial intelligence and decrypting the data, the Kionic Pirates now know their time of plundering the seas may come to an end.  An alliance has been formed between the various factions they prey on.  With little time to spare the Kionic Pirates begin their own defensive preparations which include sending out various special forces teams to perform recon and sabotage missions.

An area of the world that has not seen major conflict is about to erupt.  Run by powerful politicians, kings, warriors, spherists, assassins and underground networks, chances for personal gain are rife.  Spherists, people who are able to draw upon and control the energy of ethereal realms, are utilized in everything from encrypting information, communicating long distance, spying and contract killing.

Everything is about to go down and the Kionics are right in the middle of it.

One Kionic spec ops team, lead by Exphasia, a spherist, is sent to the city where she grew up.  Followed by her brother Merritt and her hard-headed friend, Rezen, they soon learn that there is far more going on than initially perceived.  Aided by an assassin, who partly shares in the Kionic’s own goals, they must recover as much intel as possible and destroy what they can before the Alliance fleet leaves dock.

And there’s something else…

Communication and other spherical activities are being scrambled and hampered by an unknown storm brewing over the mountains to the east. Something is wrong.

And Rezen’s nightmares are getting worse…

Interview

1) Sean, please share with us a little about yourself.

I’m an author and illustrator just trying to get noticed in this tough industry. I write dark fiction and illustrate children’s books.

Follow up question – You do two extremely different things. How did you find out you had talent in both areas and that you intended to pursue them both?

I didn’t actually intend to pursue either in life. I was asked by a publisher who had seen my art to illustrate a book and I said why not.I never had a dream to become an illustrator, but decided to give it a shot and found it to be fun. I also never had any real dream to become a writer, but being disappointed with most of the material I was reading I figured something needed to be done and that’s how I got sucked into the world of writing.  Drawing and writing aren’t all that different.  They are both creative outlets so switching between them is easy enough.

2) What inspired this novel/series?

I was getting tired of reading or seeing the same kind of boring tropes in the fantasy genre. It’s always the same stuff and I was just sick of it. I looked everywhere for something different and it didn’t exist so I decided to write something myself.

3) What authors do you enjoy reading?

One of my favorite authors is Michael Crichton. The mixture of science and adventure really inspired me.

4) Do the characters often do their own thing, no matter how you planned the story?

Sometimes. I have found that a good mixture of both is needed. Letting your characters go without any intervention can lead to staleness over time. You have to jump in sometimes and mess with them. Doing this will inject fresh ideas that would not have been possible had you just let them go. On the flip side, not letting your character take control sometimes will not allow natural development. So I mix it up.

5) What is your advice for someone who wants to write a novel?

If you start it, finish it. Probably the biggest problem with new writers is that they never actually finish a project. It’s hard to submit a work if you never finish it. Stop jumping around from all of your various stories.

Pick one, get it done.

6) Besides this novel, what can we expect from you in the future?

The sequel to Wicked Tides, Wrathful Echoes, is the next book that I will be releasing this year. It’s currently all done and in the publisher’s hands. Look for it later this year.
